Spotted! Kids Who Love Learning!
Mrs Campbell and Mrs O spotted these gorgeous Kohara kids busy working on their independent learning tasks BEFORE school had even started the other day!!!!!!

Sherbet Makers - Josie & Sam, Anika & Lucia
Josie and Sam had lots of fun making sherbet together as did Anika and Lucia. Sherbet is an interesting science project - as the ingredients combine to create a reaction. It also involves accurate measuring to get just the right taste. Maths and Science!!
Sarah's Special Visitor
Look who Sarah brought along to visit Kohara - her dog Poppy! Poppy was very friendly and enjoyed getting a pat from all the children. Here is Poppy showing us how she can shake hands!
Baking Fun with Luca, Avania, Luka and Atlas
Luca had a baking project planned - making ANZAC biscuits. She was very kind in letting a few helpers come along to assist her in the kitchen. They had lots of fun measuring, mixing and following the instructions - and the biscuits smelled delicious. They said they tasted delicious too!!
Then there was more maths at the end to share them out. They told us that 16 biscuits shared among 4 children worked out to 4 biscuits each. The teachers were a bit sad there were no spares!

Kobe's Car
Kobe has been working on his car project for a long time and we enjoyed seeing the finished product with all it's details and additions. This car has a secret compartment under the boot - great for hiding your special things - at the moment Kobe has the key to his car in there! Kobe made a helmet to wear as well - Gary the gorilla decided to test it out while he took Olly the Orangutan for a spin and they tell us it was really good fun! Kobe - we loved how you thought carefully about the things a car needs - even your door opens to let the driver in and out!
James Sews A Plane
James has just completed his very first sewing project in Kohara. What a fabulous job he has made using neat even stitches. Then James added details to the outside - it looks like it would be a great toy or even a cushion for his bedroom!
Thomas Makes A Slingshot
Thomas loved the slingshot Atlas made that he decided to plan and create his very own one. We love how it is decorated in a different way to the one Atlas made - this makes it unique to Thomas. We wonder what he will launch from it?
Fletcher's Wooden Plane
Fletcher's idea for his project came from a wooden plane he had made at Mitre 10 Mega but he wanted to improve his design. Fletcher knew exactly what he wanted to make but along the way he learned that his plane was a bi-plane and also that it had lots of little details when you looked closely at pictures. We challenged Fletcher to see how to add these to his plane and were amazed by how detailed Fletcher made it - check out the tiny wooden pieces that Fletcher had to measure to get just the right size! We found a big container of buttons and Fletcher had fun choosing buttons the right size for the wheels and the propeller.
We were so impressed we sent Fletcher over to share it with Mr Anderson and now you can see his plane on display in the school office!
Our next challenge is for Fletcher to teach others how to make one - he has practised on his friend James and now he is ready to run some workshops for others in Kohara to learn from him.

Jack's Rocket
Jack has rediscovered his rocket project and we love how he decided to finish it off so it was completed. Jack was inspired by other rocket projects he has seen in Kohara so decided to make his own. Jack had to use a few different techniques to stick it together - tape, and the hot glue gun. You created a sturdy base for your rocket Jack - well done.
Ruby's Cat Sewing
Check out Ruby's seriously cute cat! Ruby decided to channel he love of cats into her latest project and she has added lots of interesting details to finish it off. What a high quality project Ruby. You persevered on this project - stitching by hand can be pretty tricky!
Arlo's Boat
Arlo decided to do a science project by creating a boat and then seeing if it would float. Arlo has made his boat out of box construction but a friend suggested it might not be waterproof enough so Arlo is not refining his boat using plastic to line the bottom. We are looking forward to testing it out very soon!
Tom's Motorbike Sewing
Tom loves spending time in his weekends going motorbiking so he planned a sewing project based around his interest in motorbikes. This was Tom's first sewing project in Kohara and we love how he thought really carefully about how to add different parts to his motorbike - great use of detail!
Singing Superstars - Dustyn, Oscar, Anika and Monty
Lately in Kohara we have enjoyed listening to several singing projects. We are always amazed how brave the children are to stand in front of their friends and classmates and sing by themselves. Singing projects are a great way to practise being in front of an audience and projecting our voices so people can hear us. Well done to each of the following children for their wonderful singing - Dustyn, Oscar, Anika and Monty.
Daffodil Art Winners
Congratulations to Sam (1st), Anika (2nd) and Tom (3rd) for their prize winning art in the recent daffodil art competition that Mrs Jenkins was running. We think they did a great job and lovely to see them enjoying the opportunity to create art at home as well.

This week the Room 18 children have PE with Mr Lukes on Thursday morning from 9-10.30am.
No CRT this week for the Room 19 children.
Upcoming Dates for the Diary
On Friday 21st September there is a red and black themed mufti day (gold coin donation) to help fundraise for the Cross Country Champs who are now off to represent Waimairi School at the next level of competitions. Wear your favourite red and black clothes.
On the last Wednesday of term (Wednesday 26 September) there will be a black and white themed mufti day (gold coin donation) to help the Chess team fundraise to get to the National Tournament after winning the South Island title recently.

Please encourage children to check the class lost property box for items of clothing. There are a lot of sweatshirts currently waiting to be claimed. A reminder that children should be wearing school sweat shirts or polar fleeces rather than non uniform jerseys please.
Art
We are currently enjoying creating our art for Calendar Art. Orders for these will be sent home later in the month and will be available to view in Kohara once finished. We are focusing on using shapes and lines within our art. We look forward to sharing these with you soon.
Our paper mâché bee sculpture is also finished now and looks amazing! Well done to Mrs Campbell and the Kohara children for all their work on this over the last few months - check it out next time you are in class. It is sitting perched above our quiet room watching over us all. Maybe it's the Queen Bee and we are the drones?
Place Value
Some of our children have been exploring Place Value in maths lately. This ties in really well with money so next time you are at the shops why not talk to the children about the price of your shopping and see if they can work out how many ten dollar notes and one dollar coins you would need to pay for it. Or for those who love a challenge what about hundreds??
High Frequency Words
For those children who are learning List 1-3 high frequency words - we will be testing these again before the end of term - keep up the practise at home.

The Connect Waimairi group have organised a night for the Kohara parents to get together for dinner at Phuket Thai on Papanui Road on Wednesday 19th September at 7pm. If you would like to come please rsvp to Fran Paget (Sam's mum in Kohara) - her details will be on the Kohara friendship list or else you can check the Connect Waimairi Community Facebook page.

Week 7 (3-7 September)
Welcome to Week 7 :)
Sickness
There is a bit of a stomach/vomiting bug going around at the moment as well as the usual coughs and colds. A reminder with vomiting that children should be kept at home for an additional 24 hours from the last bout of sickness.
School Photos
This Thursday 6 September we have our class photos. A reminder there are no family photos this year. Please see separate blog notice for uniform requirements.
Craft Club Tuesday lunchtimes
Playground Leaders
We are lucky enough to have senior playground leaders on duty at lunchtimes every day except Friday to help run games for our junior children. On Fridays until the end of the term, some of the playground leaders are working with our class to get to know the children and teach them some of the games that they run during lunchtimes. The children can meet at 12.45pm onwards by the big tree on the field and look for the leaders in their yellow vests and then join in the fun. Why not ask your child if they have been to have a go lately.
Projects
Wow we have some really amazing projects being shared with Kohara lately. Sometime soon when time allows we will post the photos - there is rather a lot so stay tuned!!!
Reminder
A friendly reminder that children should not be in the classrooms before 8.30am as there is no guaranteed supervision of your children before this time. In the event of an emergency/earthquake etc would your child know what to do if they were in the classroom alone? We are often at before school meetings, have parent interviews or are busy in and out of Kohara with classroom preparation so we appreciate your support with this.

James's and Julie's treat for Kohara
Julie came in today to share her badminton rackets and shuttlecocks with Kohara. It's great to try something new on a Friday!! Thanks Julie and James.
