Farewell to Miss T
This Thursday 16 November is Miss T's final day with us. Those last seven weeks have flown by and we have loved having Lisa as part of the teaching team in Kohara. A huge thank you to Lisa for all her efforts with planning and teaching the children - we are going to miss her!

This week will be the last week for individual weekly spelling words. Please also revise your cild's previous list words as we will be re-testing the Essential List words over the last few weeks of the term.

Sunhats
A reminder to please check that sunhats without the quick release safety catch must have the cords cut off for safety. Those with the new quick release catches are fine as they are :)

Swimming
The school pool opens from Show Weekend. Class swimming will be starting up from next week, weather permitting. We will advise soon as to our class scheduled swimming days.

Junior Athletics and Triathlon
Your child should have brought home a notice on Friday with the information about our upcoming Junior Athletics and Triathlon on Wednesday 29 November (although we did find several left lying outside on the ground!)

Athletics is from 11-12.30pm at school on the field followed by a community picnic lunch (coffee shop will be open).

The triathlon is an optional event in the afternoon on the same day - permission slips need to be sent back to school if your child would like to take part in this. Any questions, please just ask :)

PTA
The next PTA meeting is coming up n Tuesday 21st November at 7.30pm in the school library. This is our last meeting for the year and we'd love to see you. If you're curious about what we do or would just like to lend a hand and support the crew with our fundraising and social events over the year please feel free to come along and join us.

A huge thanks to the PTA for organising the recent movie night screening of Bad Moms. It was so lovely to see so many Kohara mums enjoying a few laughs and a great movie.

The PTA are also selling the ECO fruit and vege bags and dishcloths. These would make great stocking stuffers for Christmas. The oldest in the family should have had information about these. If you are interested there is also information pinned on our classroom door.

No Touch Rugby on Tuesday
No Touch rugby this week due to Cup Day. Touch will resume as normal the following week.

Have a great week :)

Hat Cords

Today we did a check of sunhats. There is information in this week's newsletter about this. Any hats that do not have a quick release catch on it must have the cords cut off please. This is in the event of any children getting stuck on playground equipment, trees etc.

Any questions, please just ask.

Health & PE Change of Days

The juniors will run their Health & PE groups on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning this week instead of the Wednesday/Thursday previously planned.

Ice Blocks Galore!

Maybe it's all the recent sunshine we have had, as in Kohara the children can't get enough of making ice blocks. Perhaps they were inspired by Addison, Zora and Sophie?

Making ice blocks is a great way to learn about temperature and time (maths). We have found out that leaving our ice blocks overnight in the freezer is best as otherwise they do not set hard enough. We also get to observe the changes from a liquid to a solid, just like a scientist! The children have also enjoyed experimenting with a variety of flavours - tasting them is equally important!

Dustyn, Sam, Luka and Jack ready to put their ice blocks in the freezer.

Taste testers!

Getting the mixture just right!

Some lemon juice for extra flavour.

Lucia, Anika, Gabriel and Oscar ready to try them out. They look delicious!

Sewing Helper Needed

Update: all sorted. Thanks Jen for offering.

We are after a parent helper to help Ella out with her sewing project - she is making a top to wear.
If you can spare an hour sometime this week please let us know. Ella would really appreciate it.
Many Thanks

Lochie and Alex made a marble run!

This marble run was designed by Lochie and Alex because they had seen Addison and Lauren make one. It's good to copy ideas and change or improve the design. Lochie and Alex had some advice from other people but trialled their marble run until it was working perfectly. Great team work boys.

Dustyn's Farm House

Check out Dustyn's farm house - it has a cannon and a diving board!! Dustyn was working on adding details to his box construction project. We wondered why they would need a cannon? Maybe to keep them safe. What do you think...?

Week 4 (6-10 November)

Welcome to Week 4 :)

Sunhats
Please ensure your child has a blue sunhat at school every day.

Staffing
On Tuesday, we will be released from 11.45-3pm as part of our Maths Inquiry Project. Mrs Lynda Wilson and Ms Jill Kelk will be relieving in Kohara.

PE & Health Inquiry
This week we have our PE and Health rotations on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.

Spelling
Please remember to send spelling notebooks to school on a Thursday. Last week less than half the class handed their notebooks in for testing. If your child did not hand in their book, please revise the spelling words from the previous week ready for testing this Thursday.

Soon we will be beginning to re-test the Essential List spelling words as part of our end of term testing so you may also like to revise previous words that your child has been given. Why not have some fun with your words this week - write them in shaving foam with your finger, dip a paintbrush in water and 'paint' them on a concrete path or on a fence, or draw the words in rainbow writing (write the word with different colour crayons using each colour to write the letter over top of the previous colour).

Library
Remember to send books back to school before Friday.

Kapa Haka on Tuesday

Lunchtime Clubs
Monday: Chess club and French club
Tuesday: Craft/Sewing club
Thursday: Art club

Rest Home Visit
We are currently planning a visit to the Fitzroy Rest Home at the end of the year to share our singing with the residents. This is a special opportunity for Kohara as Mrs Campbell's mum is a resident there. We have already started practising but we will be polishing our singing over the next few weeks and are lucky enough to have Archie's mum Ali coming in to help us out. We will let you know more details once they are finalised.

Junior Athletics and Triathlon
This will be coming up on Wednesday 29 October (postponement Thursday 30th November). Our junior athletics takes place on our school field between 11-12.30 pm and the junior triathlon is in the afternoon. All children take part in the athletics, but the triathlon is a fun optional event for those who want to give it a try - running/walking, biking/scootering and swimming (or walking a length of the pool). A notice will be coming home soon with more details. Pop the date in your diary in the meantime.

School Pool
The school pool will hopefully be open for Show Weekend. You can purchase a key for your family at the school office (sorry keys are not transferable between other families). Keys cost $75 for the season and this includes a 2-3 night pool duty during the swimming season (this only involves putting the cover on in the evening and checking the area has been left tidy), or there are a limited number of keys available for those who are unable to do a duty and these cost $110. The cost includes a $20 bond which is refunded next year when keys are returned. Be in quick as last year the pool keys sold out! A huge thanks to the PTA for their recent working bee - the pool grounds are looking fabulous!

Have a great week :)

A really kind gift!!

Today Kohara had a lovely surprise from Jacob, Harry, Cooper and Enzo. These boys created a hot wheels race track in Discovery. However, they couldn't decide who would take it home. So being the kind boys that they are they donated their track to the children in Kohara to use. We were delighted to accept to their kind gift. Thank you so much boys!

Whanau Hui Friday 5pm

Remember there is a whanau hui tonight (Friday) starting at 5pm for all those with an interest in Maori achievement and engagement. All welcome - bring a picnic dinner. A lovely way to wrap up for the year.

Thursday, 2 November 2017

Welcome

A special welcome to Siale-Maia who joins us in Kohara.

Siale-Maia comes to us from Otaki and it is lovely that her big brother Ray-Jean is nearby in Kahukura. You can meet Siale-Maia, her Mum Tutina and her family at next week's Monday Meet Up. Meanwhile, if you see them around school please make them feel welcome and say hello - we are sure they'd love that :)

Second Hand Uniform Sale

Need a spare item of uniform?

The PTA are once again holding a second hand uniform sale at the hall on Monday 13 November. You can pop along before school from 8.30am or just before pick up at 2.30pm and top up your supplies. Payment is by way of donation only.

If you have any spare uniform pieces that you'd like to donate for the sale, in good, clean condition (no rips or stains) please feel free to drop them off to the office.

A huge thank you to our fabulous PTA for giving up their time. You guys rock!!

Library Day Friday

Please send library books along for our library session on Friday.

Hannah's House

Wow Hannah! We were so impressed with your house - it has everything you could possibly need. We think it is amazing how detailed our projects are becoming after three terms in Kohara. Now even our box construction furniture is the right size, and is measured carefully to fit the toys who live in them. Hannah did a great job of creating many different rooms in her house with so many features. Please check it out next time you are in Kohara - we are sure Hannah would love to show you all the detailed parts!

Here is Hannah ready us her recount about how she made it. We still have more photos to come!

Wonder Woman Khori

Is it a bird?
Is it a plane?
No, it's Wonder Woman... also known as Khori!!

Khori created her costume so she could use it for Halloween. She used pictures from the internet to help with the colours and pieces she would need. Everything you see (cape, arm bands, and belt) is hand sewn, and we love how her friends gave suggestions for how to attach the buttons. Khori showed great perseverance as she worked on her project over several weeks, doing a little bit each day. Well done Khori - we think you look Wonderful!

Jam Sandwiches

Miss T has been having lots of fun with her writing groups. They have been learning about how to write instructions, using specific language in sequence.

The Splendid Storytellers group (Jonty, Awatea, Vihaan, Gemma, Shiva, Louis, Blake) brainstormed how to make sandwiches and we discovered that some of the children were confused between toast and sandwiches so we compared the two to find out the similarities and differences.

Then the children had a go at making their own sandwiches. There was some fabulous language being used as the children discussed the process - buttering to the edges, spreading the jam, folding bread or cutting the sandwiches in half equally. We love how maths is involved in so many things we do!

Next the group are going to write their instructions in sequence so that others can follow them to make their own. What would you choose to put in your sandwich? Mrs O likes chicken and avocado. What is your favourite?

Shiva the Storyteller

Following our session with author Juliette McIvor, Shiva hunted out some of her stories at the library. Shiva offered to read one to Kohara - we loved listening to him reading about Marmaduke Duck and now we are on a mission to find more of her stories! Thanks Shiva for being so kind and sharing with us.

Health and PE Activities

Here are some snap shots of some of the things we are getting up to in our PE and Health rotations while focusing on how we can make our interactions with others better...

Oscar had fun creating caterpillars using healthy foods.

Ben enjoyed getting to interact with his sister in folk dancing - how special to be able to help our younger siblings with their learning!

Sophie, Addison and Zora Make Iceblocks

Sophie, Addison and Zora made berry smoothie ice blocks. Yum, doesn't that make you think of summer!

First they had to make a syrup by heating lemon juice and water.

Next they chopped up strawberries and blitzed them in the blender before adding them to the syrup.

Finally they poured the liquid into ice block containers and put them in the freezer overnight.

The recipe said to leave them for 6 hours. The girls checked after 4 and a half hours but they weren't quite ready. Can you use your maths knowledge to work out how much longer they needed to have in the freezer?

Some Spooky Friends...

You never know who you'll meet when you are out and about on a Tuesday night...
